About Wilpattu National Park – Land of Lakes & Leopards

Wilpattu National Park, spanning over 131,000 hectares, is Sri Lanka's largest and one of its oldest protected wilderness areas. Renowned as the "Land of Lakes," Wilpattu is famous for its unique cluster of natural, rainwater-filled basins called "villus," which attract diverse wildlife throughout the year. Some of the best leopard sightings in Sri Lanka occur here, thanks to the park's relatively low tourism and natural habitat. Rich wildlife includes Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, spotted and sambar deer, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species including endemic varieties. Located near ancient Anuradhapura, the park contains archaeological ruins and is recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of international importance.
